Who is Sara Bird?

Sara Bird is an obesity and longevity specialist and PhD researcher whose work focuses exclusively on health span in women over 50.
Her research explores how obesity, ageing, identity, and lived experience interact — shaping energy, confidence, health outcomes, and the ability to remain engaged in later life.

What makes Sara’s work distinctive is her integration of:

  • Obesity science
  • Longevity research
  • Behavioural science

She translates complex academic insight into frameworks that feel practical, empowering, and sustainable for real women.

Through Flight by Sara Bird, she supports individuals and organisations to reimagine ageing not as decline, but as a stage of renewed strength and possibility..

From FATorexia to Flight - A Fifteen-Year Evolution

2010 — Introducing FATorexia

Sara Bird publishes FATorexia: What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror?, a bold exploration of how women living with obesity experience identity, visibility, and self-perception.

At a time when conversations around obesity centred largely on weight loss, FATorexia placed lived experience at the heart of the discussion — challenging assumptions about how women see themselves and how they are seen by others.

This work laid the intellectual foundation for Sara’s long-term exploration of obesity, identity, and confidence.

2010–2018 — Lived Experience and Identity Work

Over the following years, Sara worked closely with women navigating obesity, midlife transitions, and shifting identities.

These experiences revealed a deeper truth: obesity cannot be separated from emotional labour, social roles, and the invisible pressures many women carry throughout their lives.

The early insights from FATorexia evolved into a broader understanding of embodiment, visibility, and self-perception — themes that continue to underpin Sara’s work today.

2019 — SqWears Couture: Embodiment in Practice

In 2019, Sara founded SqWears Couture, a plus-size couture label showcased at London Fashion Week.

Rather than a departure from her work, SqWears represented an applied exploration of visibility and identity for women living in larger bodies — challenging the absence of elegant fashion designed with them in mind.

This experience deepened Sara’s understanding of how clothing, confidence, and self-perception intersect with obesity and ageing.

The insights gained during this period now inform the Fashion and Identity pillar within her obesity and longevity frameworks.

Doctoral Research — Obesity & Longevity

Building on nearly a decade of lived-experience work, Sara’s PhD research expanded into the intersection of obesity and longevity in women over 50.

Her research explores how metabolic health, identity, resilience, and lived experience shape women’s ability to remain strong, visible, and engaged as they age.

This work bridges a critical gap — bringing women-specific obesity insights into longevity science and workforce strategy.

Flight by Sara Bird — A Research-Led Framework

Flight was created to translate years of lived experience and doctoral research into practical, evidence-based frameworks for individuals and organisations.

Rather than generic wellbeing, Flight focuses on:

  • health span and sustainable ageing
  • identity and confidence in later life
  • the interconnected realities of obesity and longevity

Flight operates at the intersection of research, lived experience, and strategic application — supporting both women and organisations navigating an ageing workforce.

F-Life — Beyond FATorexia

The F-Life intervention represents the evolution of Sara’s work — moving beyond identity alone toward strength, vitality, and purposeful living.

What began as a conversation about how women see themselves has grown into a structured pathway supporting women to feel:

  • more capable
  • more visible
  • more energised
  • more aligned with who they are now

F-Life brings together fifteen years of insight into one cohesive framework grounded in obesity and longevity science.

Beyond FATorexia — The Journey Continues

This timeline reflects more than fifteen years of exploration into the lived experience of obesity and ageing.

Today, Sara’s work integrates science, embodiment, and strategic insight - redefining what it means for women over 50 to thrive with confidence, strength, and longevity.
